Community service is part of the Tri Dharma of higher education which in its implementation cannot be separated from the other two dharmas and involves all academic civitas: teaching staff, students, education staff and alumni. The Ophthalmology Study Program refers to the Road Map of research and community service of the Ophthalmology Study Program for 2019-2021. The Road Map of research and community service is made based on the vision and mission of the study program, university road map, and faculty road map.

The community service activities that have been carried out by the Ophthalmology Study Program for the last three years are 72 titles. The theme of community service is in accordance with the roadmap that has been prepared, as well as in accordance with the vision and mission of the Ophthalmology Study Program. The submission of titles or themes of community service through a selection process by the Education Planning and Development Unit has been in accordance with the research and community service procedures at the Study Program Management Unit. Thus, it is expected that the title or theme of community service will be in line with the roadmap that has been prepared.

The community service activities by lecturers and students are always monitored and evaluated. Monitoring is carried out so that the output and implementation of community service activities that have been carried out can run as planned. Monitoring is carried out by the Education Planning and Development Unit by inviting the chairperson/team to present/present progress reports on community service activities accompanied by evidence of activities. User satisfaction surveys for community service are also conducted through questionnaire surveys/form monitoring and evaluation to partners and participants of community service activities. The survey results show that the results of community service are beneficial for users both the community and related agencies and hope that the community service activities will continue and maintain cooperation. In order to increase the relevance of research with the Faculty’s roadmap, it will maximize the performance of the Education Planning and Development Unit and study programs through coordinators in the field of community service will increase relevance roadmap with monitoring since in proposal submission stage.

The lecturers of the Ophthalmology Study Program actively disseminate information and knowledge on eye health to the public and collaborate with private and government parties through various counseling activities conducted face-to-face or using other media such as online, radio, social media and print media. The lecturers of the Ophthalmology Study Program strive to increase the knowledge and skills of the community in accordance with their fields of science by publishing books and educational videos. Books and educational videos published include Knowing eye diseases in the elderly, Cataract Education, Diabetic Retinopathy Education, Glaucoma Education. The books and educational videos have been registered as Intellectual Property Rights (IPR). Through these books and educational videos, it is expected to increase public knowledge related to eye diseases as a form of participation of the Ophthalmology Study Program in increasing public knowledge.

The Ophthalmology Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, in collaboration with the Semarang City Government and the Semarang City Health Office, has a Center for Service and Development of Community Eye Health Programs (P4KMM) in Gunungpati District, Semarang City. Community service and research activities are held regularly every month in this area. The community service activities carried out include health promotion, screening or early detection, case management, training in early detection skills for visual impairment and blindness for General Practitioners, other Health Workers and cadres and community-based research. The source of funds for conducting these activities comes from community service grants from the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University. The indicators of success of this activity are measured from the improvement of eye health status of the community in Gunungpati District. The success of the activity is indicated by an increase in knowledge and awareness of eye health from the community, an increase in early detection skills for visual impairment and blindness by cadres and other health workers. The Ophthalmology Study Program at Diponegoro University’s Faculty of Medicine also continuously provides Phacoemulsification training to fellow Ophthalmologists and participants of the Ophthalmology Specialist Doctor Education Program according to their education stages.
